How-to

How long should a resume be in 2026?

Most candidates over-write resumes and under-edit them. The right length is the shortest length that proves you can do the job — usually one page early in your career, two pages once you have real scope.

One page is the default for candidates with under ~8 years of relevant experience. Anything past one page is real estate you have to earn with evidence, not job titles.

Two pages are appropriate once you have multiple roles with quantified impact, or when the JD specifically asks for breadth (research, leadership, publication history).

Length matters less than density. A two-page resume of strong, quantified outcomes beats a one-page resume crammed with vague duties every time — density wins.

Cut: unrelated jobs older than ~10 years, hobbies that do not connect to the role, soft-skill bullets that any candidate could write, and any bullet that does not have a verb or a number.

Related questions

Is two pages always bad for an entry-level resume?+

Usually, yes. If you're under 5 years out of school, a recruiter will treat page 2 as filler. Strong one-pagers beat weak two-pagers every time.

How do I cut without losing important roles?+

Keep the role headers (company + title + dates) and trim bullets. A role with one or two strong outcomes is far better than five vague ones.

Does an ATS care about page count?+

No. ATS parsers read text continuously. The page-count rule is about the human recruiter who reads page 1 in ~7 seconds and rarely turns to page 2.
